How to analyze a chemical formula

  1. Enter a chemical formula with the correct element capitalization.
  2. Include groups, hydrate water, isotope labels, or ionic charge when required.
  3. Select Analyze formula and review the composition and formula checks.

What the analyzer calculates

The parser expands every supported group into element counts. It then calculates mass, composition, charge-based electron count, formula notation, and supported DBE results.

Interpretation limits

A chemical formula does not show atom connectivity, stereochemistry, phase, or one unique compound name. Use structural and spectral evidence to identify a compound.

DBE uses a standard valence model. The analyzer does not force a DBE result for metals, hydrates, or unsupported elements.

Frequently asked questions

Can the analyzer read parentheses and brackets?

Yes. The parser expands parentheses, square brackets, and nested groups before it counts atoms.

Can the analyzer read hydrates?

Yes. Enter a period or middle dot before each hydrate component, such as CuSO4.5H2O.

Can I enter isotope labels and ionic charge?

Yes. Enter labels such as 13C and charges such as NH4+ or [Fe(CN)6]3-.

Does a chemical formula identify one structure?

No. A formula gives composition but not atom connectivity. Different isomers can have the same formula.

What is the empirical formula?

The empirical formula gives the smallest whole-number element ratio. The molecular formula gives the actual atom counts.

What is Hill notation?

Hill notation lists carbon first, hydrogen second, and other elements alphabetically. Formulas without carbon use alphabetical order.

What does DBE mean?

DBE estimates the combined number of rings and pi bonds. The analyzer reports it only for supported element sets.

Why can monoisotopic mass be unavailable?

Exact mass needs reviewed isotope data for every element. The analyzer states when that data is incomplete.
